What to Expect at a Lactation Consult

First Visit | $175

This visit usually takes about 1.5 hours, or longer if there are many factors or multiple babies. Two weeks of free call/text/email support is included with this visit. During this time we’ll go over your history, your baby’s history, weigh baby, physical exam of you and baby and evaluate a feeding. If you’re using bottles, or other feeding methods we can observe the use of those feeding tools as well. Then we’ll create a custom care plan and schedule a follow up that best supports you and your family. Please plan to have main support people present for this visit.

Follow Up Visits | $100 (Virtual $75)

I like to think of this as a check point along a journey. These visits are 45-60 minutes and are a follow up to a previous visit. We’ll assess you and babies current status, weigh baby, answer questions and address challenges that you may have. We will also celebrate progress and any ‘wins’. Please feel free to have your main support people present at this visit (virtually is ok).

Pump, Bottles, Return to Work/School Visits add-on | $30-75

This visit type can occur in conjunction with another visit or on their own. Typically, this add-on visit takes between 20-45min and is coupled with either a first visit or follow up, depending on how much I already know about your situation. During this time we will evaluate your “tool box”. This means we’ll evaluate your feeding goals, your history and the tools you have. Then we’ll make sure the tools you have are going to help meet your feeding goals.

Virtual Check-In | $50

This visit is for families who I have worked with before, with the current baby. This would be a 10–30-minute, telehealth visit through my HIPPA compliant virtual platform. This is a great time to have a couple quick questions answered or for reassurance as your feeding relationship develops with your child.

FAQs

  • A lactation consultant is a health care professional who is an expert in infant feeding, human lactation, and the clinical management of feeding care plans. IBCLC stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. They can help with breastfeeding, chestfeeding/bodyfeeding, bottle feeding, removing milk with a pump, milk supply, latch issues, infant feeding behaviors, weaning and transitioning to solid food. We are also able to meet with expecting parents to help support feeding success after baby arrives. Lactation Consultants are also experienced detectives and can help with complex situations to help families meet their feeding goals.

  • Litteton, Lakewood, Golden, Arvada, SW Denver, Englewood, Highlands Ranch, Centennial, Lone Tree, Roxborough Park, Castle Pines. As well as mountain towns within 25 mins of 470 between I-70 to Deer Creek Canyon.

If you are outside of my service area, it will be $25 travel fee. Please contact me if this is a barrier to care so we can work out an alternative plan.

  • According to the Affordable Care Act lactation consultants should be covered by insurance, but this is still a work in progress. The ACA mandated that all “new” plans cover support, counseling and equipment for feeding for the duration of breastfeeding. This means that grandfathered plans do not fit under this mandate, and some insurance plans have minimal coverage. Additionally, federal insurance plans do not cover lactation consultants.

    But, WE HAVE OPTIONS!!

    1. I partner with The Lactation Network to bill insurance companies so you get better coverage, and I keep my costs down. Please click here to see if you’re eligible for coverage through insurance.

    2. If your private insurance does not offer coverage, I can provide a superbill. This can be submitted to your insurance company for reimbursement.

    3. I offer a 50% discount to current recipients of federal insurance plans (medicade, medicare, tricare). If you identify as BIPOC, a teen parent or LGBTQ+, I offer a sliding scale. Please notify me that this is your situation so our financial plan can be set ahead of our visit.

    4. HSA and FSA: Lactation Consultants are supposed to be covered by these benefits. I cannot guarantee coverage as different plans set their own policies. I am happy to provide any documentation as needed to get you coverage, but it’s really between you and your benefit provider to sort out the details. Please email with requests for documentation.

  • I accept cash, check, credit card, HSA/FSA

-In-home consults: You can pay online when I arrive at your home.

-Virtual Consults: Payment is due when you schedule a visit.

-Covered Insurance: If you have BCBS PPO, Anthem BCBS PPO, Cigna PPO, or United PPO and been approved through The Lactation Network, no payment is due. Click here to see if you are covered by TLN:

  • If you cancel or reschedule within 24 hours, there is a $25 fee.

If you no call/no show, you’ll be charged for the full visit.

If I cancel or reschedule there is no charge to you. I will also make sure you have referrals to trusted and vetted providers.

If we should meet virtually instead of a previously scheduled in-home visit because of illness, please notify me as soon as possible.

  • I am fully vaccinated (including any available boosters) for COVID-19 and Flu. Since I have very regular, close contact with many people and many of them are small infants, I will be wearing a mask while in your home. I sanitize my equipment after each visit and use strict hand cleaning procedures.

If anyone in your home is exhibiting signs or symptoms of illness please contact me as soon as possible to switch to a virtual consult. There is no charge for this change/reschedule.

  • I am a parent and have been in this field for almost 2 decades, so know babies are unpredictable and I really do understand!! Thank you for trying to make the most of our time together!

-If you can try to feed your baby about 2 hours before our vist, that is great…if they are very hungry right ahead of our visit, try to make it just a little snack to tide them over. If they need to eat right when I walk in the door, that’s ok! I can roll with almost anything!

-Your main support people will benefit from the information covered, and can have their questions answered too. I love having families support feeding journeys

-If you have other small children, it’s a great time for them to be out of the house, napping, or enjoying screen time. Yet, we all know that our plans are usually different from their plans. So, no judgement here!! I know you’ll get more out of our time together if you are able to focus on the baby.

-That said, I LOVE tandem feeding and extending feeding. If this is a part of your journey and your reason for seeking my services, clearly it’s helpful to have your older child.

-Silence your phones’ notifications. Turn off the TV. No other visitors. please and thank you.

-You are welcome to eat and drink during our visit. Sleep and clothing (of the feeding parent) are optional.

-Do not worry about cleaning your house or even picking up!! I have had 2 babies…I understand, and I’d much rather you be resting and snuggling your baby!!

  • Absolutely!! I am happy to help with anything related to formulas, bottle feeding and even have quite a few tips to help with bottle refusal. I am also happy to work with you and your childcare provider to feed your baby in whatever way is best for your baby and your family.

  • YES!! I have taught a variety of classes about feeding babies, birth, and the early postpartum period. I can customize a class to meet your needs and so it will provide you and your chosen people with the appropriate information to support you, your baby and your family. We can even do a group class if that’s what you’re hoping for.
